The Many Surfaces of Dry Erase
Dry erase (AKA white board or makerboard) walls are hugely popular for creative spaces. So, we took note recently when a lively discussion about the pros and cons of dry erase paint came up on a campus facility management list serve. Here is a summary of what we have seen and heard:
Pros: Dry erase paint is a relatively low commitment solution. It is inexpensive and can simply be painted over if the room or surface needs to change. It is completely seamless and can be applied in any size and shape.
Cons: Dry erase paint is best when applied to a completely flat (level 5) surface. Greg Widener, Physical Plant Project Manager at Hope College, explains “The biggest problem arises when someone uses a permanent marker on the painted white board surface or allows the dry-erase marker ink to remain on the writing surface too long... We have several painted wall surfaces on campus that were done a few years back. Not to say that products haven’t improved, but our custodians are challenged to keep them clean or not look dingy.” Others in the discussion, mentioned that the cleaning products recommended or covered by warranty are costly and do not work with permanent marker or left-on marker. As a result, the surface needs to be regularly reapplied to keep it looking clean, which is expensive and time consuming for maintenance staff.
Pros: Like paint, vinyl wall covering has a relatively low cost and is fairly easy to install. It can be applied in various sizes and shapes and easily removed. Vinyl is slightly more durable than paint and some products even repel permanent marker and ghosting.
Cons: Like paint, Vinyl is not scratch or dent resistant and cannot be cleaned with harsh chemicals or scrubbers. Sheets come in limited sizes leaving minimally visible seams.
Pros: Laminate markerboard panels are scratch and stain resistant.
Cons: Like paint and vinyl, caustic chemicals and scrubbers will damage laminate surfaces. ThougX

A Collaboration of Architects
We have recently established an exciting collaborative relationship with three other architecture firms. These offices have similar values but different skill sets which is a terrific resource for all involved. We would like to share a little about each firm and the work that they do:
(Photos: clockwise: Büro Für Solar-Architektur, DRCA and Dalpos)
Büro Für Solar-Architektur in Southern Germany, specializing in solar architecture, has a remarkable record of completing projects that are highly efficient and yet warm and compelling. Principal Birgit Abrecht, heads the office in Keltern-Dietlingen and regularly consults on projects throughout the EU. Birgit wrote a handbook on tips for renovation that is available as a download (link below). She also published Architectural Guide to Iceland.
David Crawford at DRCA is located just over the bridge in Cherry Hill, NJ. David and his team are leaders in the growing field of “Design & Build”. David’s office suggests that the client establish a team early on in the process before the project is fully defined. David’s download 10 Advantages of A Design Build Architect is worth a look (link below).
Dalpos Architects & Integrators has a national practice specializing in retail facilities and commercial office buildings. Senior Partner, John Bartolotti, has a remarkable ability to conceptualize and consider appropriate materials, structural systems and costs simultaneously. Their Bridgewater Place project reimagined an abandoned gear processing plant. It has many similarities to Bloomfield & Associates’ Wilde Yarns Factory Lofts building (links below).

B&A Team Wins CANstruction 2016!
2016 was CANstruction Philadelphia’s 10th anniversary and the 6th year Hannah Mattheus-Kairys participated along with team WRT/B&A/Olaya Studio. The team raised over $5,000 to design and build a huge canned food sculpture called, “Give Peas a Chance!”
The sculpture featured a 6' tall hand giving the peace sign with a swirl of tie dye around it. The theme was "Decades" and our peace sign was a nod to the 1960's.
The sculptures were on display May 14-21 at the Liberty Place rotunda in Philadelphia, before being deCANstructed and donated to Philabundance, the Delaware Valley’s largest food relief network.
The judges gave away 7 awards in total including the coveted "Judges Favorite" to our team. X

Rothenberg Hillel House at Kenyon College
Kenyon College Hillel House
At Kenyon College, 2015 saw a new building: The Rothenberg Hillel House.
This new building sits on the same site as the former Hillel: a beyond repair ramshackle house. Marc Bragin, the Jewish Chaplain, led the effort to create a space that was inviting and inspiring for the campus community.
With Marc’s goals in mind, B&A had a strong vision for the building: Though small in scale it must appear unique yet also fit comfortably within the neighborhood.
A single hallway connects the chapel with the other components making for a very efficient yet highly flexible plan.
Special details throughout include skylights and slotted windows into the chapel from Brooklyn Street which are a reminder of the rail cars that transported Jews to their death during the Holocaust.
“I continue to be amazed at the elegance of this building. In the past two weeks we have had parent’s weekend, Shabbat, bagel brunch, a memorial service, Israeli food program and that is in addition to everyday use,” Marc said. He took the photo at the right of students enjoying a meal together.X

The Lippincott Building
Throughout 2014, Bloomfield & Associates has served as special advisors to the Locust Walk Condominium Association, the residents of the historic Lippincott Building on Philadelphia’s Washington Square. Our work has included the review of all interior renovation projects occurring within the building, as well as observation and guidance regarding maintenance issues affecting the building’s celebrated facades.X

In early-2014, Rittenhouse Property Management turned to Bloomfield & Associates to assist with the renovation of the rental units and common spaces within two historic apartment buildings – The Townhouse and Delancey Place – on South 19th Street, near Rittenhouse Square. Especially challenging given several immovable obstacles, the work went beyond simply updating aesthetics to address circulation and layout issues in order to improve the overall curb appeal throughout the buildings.X

Construction at Kenyon College
Kenyon College Hillel House
The Hillel House at Kenyon is a student center that offers a highly flexible program. The floor plan addresses a broad variety of uses: On a daily basis, the spaces are divided into intimate settings that include a kosher kitchen, a dining table nearly twenty feet long, student lounge and a chapel. During special events and holidays the spaces open up to accommodate over 100.
The design is referential of the surrounding campus architecture and fits snugly on a very tight site. The building seems to also have Knox County’s first curved exterior wall which has generated a broad variety of onlookers.X

An Ode to Trade Labor in Old City
Cleary Josem & Trigiani
The Center City Philadelphia law firm, Cleary Josem & Trigiani, primarily represents labor unions and union members. The new offices are on the second floor of Constitution Place and overlook historic Carpenters’ Hall and Independence National Park. The large windows and great views were the deciding factor when the firm and B&A conducted a site search. Key to the office renovation design is a “feature wall” located in the lobby: The materials used --- stone, wood, steel, paint and glass reference some of the many trades Cleary, Josem & Trigiani represent. We need your help!
CANstruction is a unique community service event organized by AIA Philadelphia. Teams from the design and construction community will compete to build distinctive sculptures from cans of food. The resulting structures will be prominently displayed for public view in the Rotunda at Liberty Place from May 10 – 18, 2014. All of the cans of food used in the structures will be donated to Philabundance, a 501c3 charity, at the conclusion of the display.
For the last three years, this team has designed and constructed a can sculpture for vulnerable families in the Delaware Valley. In the last 2 years alone, the Philadelphia competition has provided over 100,000 lbs of food to those in need across the Delaware Valley through Philabundance, the Delaware Valley’s largest hunger relief organization. Last year our vegetable garden themed sculpture won the Judges Favorite and People’s Choice awards! We are very excited about this years design – a pop art theme based on the work of Roy Lichtenstein.
This year, once again, the WRT/B&A/Olaya team is donating our time to design, solicit materials for and construct a sculpture. We would like to ask YOU to be our partner in purchasing the cans needed for the design. We are asking you for a tax-deductible donation towards the canned food purchase. As a partner, you or your company’s name and logo will be prominently featured on the display board.
Any amount you can give will be much appreciated.
Your support is truly invaluable to the success of this event. Please consider donating to this worthy cause. Here is a link to information about this event: http://aiaphiladelphia.org/events/exhibition-canstruction-philadelphia-2014

B&A Participates in Save A Sample!
For a 3rd year, B&A participated in Specsimple.com's "Save A Sample!" sample drive.
This year, we packed up and saved 10 boxes of samples from the landfill!
Every year, Save A Sample! creates a second life for unused brochures, fabrics and finish cards. Over the years, thousands of pounds of materials have been donated by some of the country's busiest design firms. The materials are delivered to local design schools with the help of local furniture dealers. As a result, talented students have a much richer set of resources to choose from during the year.

A Visit to Towson University and WTMD
Peter, Mark, Hannah and Corinne visited the new WTMD facility to see how our design came together. While WTMD is just moving into their new space, there were volunteers hard at at work taking fundraising calls. One of the volunteers had a book at his desk to keep himself occupied - it was A Face for Radio - Peter and Mark's book! Funny sometimes how worlds can collide.
The facility looks great and everyone seemed happy to be in their new and improved space. Of note was a stunning music library and beautifully finished acoustic panels overhead in the multipurpose room/theater. Congrats WTMD!X

B&A Wins Juror's Favorite and People's Choice Awards at CANstruction 2013!
CAN You Dig It?
Bloomfield & Associates Architects with Wallace Roberts & Todd won the "Juror's Fvaorite" and "People's Choice" awards at the CANstruction 2013 Philadelphia design competition.
The structures were on display through the week of April 12-21 at the Liberty Place at 16th and Chestnut. Our design, CAN You Dig It?, was a vegetable garden themed hand trowel and carrots. It consisted of 2,500 cans of food. Thanks to our sponsors, we were able to collect an additional 500 cans of food and give a $1,000 check to Philabundance.
CANstruction is a unique design competition for the design and construction industry where teams build sculptures out of canned food and then donate the food to charitable organizations. In Philadelphia, all donations go to Philabundance to help those suffering from hunger in the Delaware Valley. Philabundance estimated that 250,000 people will be reached by hunger relief programs from this event alone.

B&A Participates in Save a Sample 2012!
Every design firm needs to clean out their sample library now and then. We were overflowing with outdated samples that would either end up in a landfill or cluttering up our shelves. This year B&A was approached by specsimple.com to participate in their SAVE A SAMPLE program. All we had to do was pack up our samples that we were no longer using... 10 boxes worth! The program coordinated some delivery guys to pick up our boxes and deliver them to Drexel University where the design students can use them for their projects.
We received this certificate from Suzanne Swift on Friday. She said the program was successful and they will be looking for even more participants and sponsors next year. Let us know if you are interested!
Update: We received this memo from Save a Sample: Nice Job Philly!
SAVE A SAMPLE! MAKES RECYCLING HISTORY IN PHILADELPHIA
SpecSimple.com's 2012 Save A Sample! Philadelphia made recycling history finding a new home for over 850 pounds of unneeded design firm samples by giving them to local Philadelphia design schools. Students from Arcadia University, Drexel University, and Philadelphia University were thrilled to receive materials to use on their projects.
"Save A Sample! Philadelphia designers are fired up to save samples from landfill!" said Suzanne Swift, Save A Sample!'s Founder and President of SpecSimple.com. "Philadelphia design firms have embraced the idea of recycling materials while helping students."
Anastasios Sioukas, architect at Studio Agoos Lovera, praises Save A Sample!'s program. "It's the perfect opportunity for our extra & outdated product samples to get a second life and not end up in a landfill. If people out there want and need what we're not using, why not let them have it?" Anastasios continues, "Save A Sample! coordination has been well managed, making it easy for firms to get involved. The sponsors and delivery drivers make it absurdly easy for us. As an office, we just clean out our samples rX
